What Man from Mayfair smells like
Our barbershop line is a tribute to Mayfair — the affluent district in London’s West End where bespoke shirts, custom suits, traditional barbershops, and the gentleman’s gentleman still anchor the daily rhythm. Man from Mayfair is the soap for the man who pays attention to the small things: a sharp shave, a clean knot in the tie, the watch matching the shoes. Refined without announcing itself.
Top notes — bergamot opens with a clean, slightly bitter citrus — the bergaptene-free version, so daily use carries no photosensitivity concern. The first ten minutes on the lather and on the skin read as bracing and quietly sophisticated.
Heart notes — basil and lavender settle in around the twenty-minute mark. The basil is what separates this from a generic barbershop — it adds a slightly green, slightly herbal lift to the lavender that keeps the heart from going soapy. The dryness of the basil pairs with the lavender’s rounder character to land on a cleanly aromatic middle.
Base notes — sandalwood (creamy, warm), patchouli (kept restrained), and oakmoss (woody, faintly damp) anchor the dry-down. A musk blend rests over a background of soft, powdery notes — the talcum-and-clean-shirt finish that defines the classic barbershop register. The full arc takes about 3 hours, finishing warm and powdery rather than woody-resinous.
If you’ve worn a classic Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet or English Fern, the structure will be familiar. Man from Mayfair is the soap-form interpretation of that traditional London barbershop register, on our Tallow base for the cleanest, most expected lather feel.

The Tallow base — why it conditions like cream
Our Tallow base is the classic single-base — the one that started the line. It’s built on beef tallow plus whole donkey milk, with kokum, shea, and cocoa butter layered on top for skin conditioning. No water buffalo milk and no whey — the dairy story here is donkey milk specifically.
What this changes in practice:
- Cleanest, most traditional lather feel. Tallow soaps are what wet shavers have used for centuries. The lather rinses cleanly, doesn’t leave residue, and feels expected under the razor.
- Donkey milk for skin. Donkey milk has been used for skin care since Cleopatra — rich in proteins, lactoglobulins, calcium, vitamin C, and B-vitamins. It’s the conditioning anchor that separates Tallow base from a vanilla coconut-and-lye soap.
- Lather body. Beef tallow plus the butter blend gives a dense, slick lather that holds its structure through a multi-pass shave.
If you want the canonical wet-shaving experience — tallow, donkey milk, no fancy add-ons — this is the base. It’s also the most-used across our heritage scent line.
Tallow or Vegan — which to pick
We make Man from Mayfair in two builds. They share the same fragrance compound (so the scent journey is identical) but the fat structure underneath is different.
Tallow ($23.99) is the original Tallow formulation. The conditioning is denser; the lather has more body. If you’ve shaved with WhollyKaw Tallow soaps before, this is the same direction.
Vegan ($21.99) swaps tallow for plant-derived fats (kokum, shea, cocoa, mango). It keeps the same fragrance and the same scent arc. The lather is bright and clean rather than dense.
If you’re new to artisan shaving soap and unsure, the Tallow build is the canonical one. The Vegan version is a careful translation, not a compromise.
Layer the full Man from Mayfair line
Man from Mayfair is built to layer. The lather you build with this soap is the start; the post-shave products carry the same fragrance through the rest of the routine so the scent doesn’t end at the rinse:
- Man from Mayfair splash — alcohol-based, bracing, antiseptic. Use directly after rinsing.
- Man from Mayfair toner — alcohol-free, witch hazel and aloe. Use if your skin doesn’t tolerate the splash.
- Man from Mayfair balm — final conditioning step. Carries the dry-down notes for hours.
For all-day skin support without competing scents, our grass-fed tallow zinc oxide cream is unscented — a daily moisturizer that won’t fight the Man from Mayfair throughline.
Who Man from Mayfair is not for
Honest limitations:
- Fragrance-sensitive skin. Man from Mayfair has a real fragrance load. If our unscented Bare Naked Shaving Soap (Tallow build) or Sans Parfum Vegan Shaving Soap (Vegan build) is what your skin tolerates, this isn’t the soap to switch to — our unscented line is fragrance-free across both Tallow and Vegan, so you don’t have to choose between sensitivity and ethics.
- Strict dairy allergies. The Tallow build contains saponified dairy proteins. Most contact-dermatitis reactions to dairy are with raw milk, not saponified milk soap, but if you have severe sensitivities, test a sample before committing to a puck.
- Looking for a designer-fragrance clone. Man from Mayfair is its own composition, not an interpretation of a popular fragrance. If you want a Tom Ford or Creed dupe in soap form, this won’t satisfy.
- Pucks-as-decor shavers. The puck is meant to be used. The fragrance is most expressive in the lather; sniffing the puck doesn’t do it justice.
Cost per shave
A 4-oz puck of WhollyKaw soap lasts most shavers 5–6 months with daily shaves. The math:
- Tallow ($23.99 / ~150 shaves) ≈ $0.16 per shave
- Vegan ($21.99 / ~150 shaves) ≈ $0.15 per shave
For comparison, a single-use disposable cartridge plus a foam can typically runs $0.40–$0.60 per shave with worse skin feel. Artisan tallow soap is more conditioning, lasts months per puck, and works out cheaper than the drugstore aisle.

What customers say
★★★★★
Great Shave
Although the scent was not to my liking the lather and resulting shave were off the charts good. Tons of easily made lather made for a smooth and slick shave. This was the first WhollyKaw soap I have used so I’m looking forward to trying other available soaps.
★★★★★
Man from Mayfair Shave Soap - Phenomenal!
The performance of this shave soap is stellar, near perfect. I have been using nothing else since it arrived, I may use nothing else ever again. In all respects the performance of this soap is fantastic - ease of lather-ability, slickness, protection, cushion...fantastic in all respects. I usually wait until I have used a whole tub before reviewing it but even after one week I have found a new favorite - Wholly Kaw (tallow) shave soap is #1. The scent? Fantastic, all the right notes and some uniqueness. You cannot go wrong here.

Addicting
Man From Mayfair is a very well balanced scent. The initial top aromatics hit with a garden-like herb aroma from the basil that lands a bit like licorice, patchouli and sandalwood fill the base with carryover to the heart that also includes musk and bergamot. I have three different scents now from WK, and they all blow me away. I'm still looking for an intense competitor for Fougere Gothique from B&M, please make me happy doing that :) Also, give me a Man From Mayfair Aftershave NOW, pretty please :)
★★★★★
Far superior barbershop
Man from Mayfair has ruined all other barbershop scents for me. It is far superior in terms of scent, lather, and slickness. I could not recommend it enough.
★★★★★
Outstanding!
All the hype is right. This product is in a class of its own. Totally blown away. Best shaving soap I have EVER used. It hits a solid “10” on every criteria.....slickness, protective, cushioning and moisturizing. Could hardly feel the blade on my face. The post-shave feeling is incredible and lasts all day..smooth, totally moisturized. Unlike any soap or cream I have ever used at any price. It is more of a croap, so cream users - like myself - will be totally comfortable with it. Incredibly easy to lather. The scent in the jar is strong...but....it mellows quite nicely when you build a lather and brush it on your face.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a puck of Man from Mayfair last?
Most shavers get 5 to 6 months out of a 4-ounce puck with daily shaving. The Tallow base lathers efficiently — you don't need to load heavily — so a puck stretches further than a typical mass-market soap. Heavy loaders or face-and-head shavers may see 3 to 4 months.
What does Man from Mayfair smell like — fresh or warm?
Classic barbershop on a powdery base. Bergamot opens; basil and lavender carry the heart; sandalwood, patchouli, and oakmoss anchor the dry-down. A musk blend rests on a background of soft, powdery notes. Bergaptene-free bergamot is used so it's safe for daily use without photosensitivity concerns.
Why is it called Man from Mayfair?
Mayfair is the affluent district in London's West End — the home of custom shirting, bespoke suiting, traditional barbershops, and the gentleman's gentleman. Man from Mayfair is the soap for the man who pays attention to the small things: custom shirts, custom suits, shoes, ties, watches, grooming products. Sharp and dapper, in a way that doesn't announce itself.
Do I need a brush for Man from Mayfair, or can I lather with my hands?
Man from Mayfair is a hard puck designed for brush use. A synthetic or boar brush builds the best lather and gives you the slickness benefits of the Tallow base. Hand-lathering works in a pinch but won't get the dense, conditioning lather the soap is designed for.
Tallow or Vegan — which to pick?
The Tallow build is built on beef tallow plus whole donkey milk — clean, traditional wet-shaving lather feel. The Vegan build swaps tallow for plant-derived fats (kokum, shea, cocoa, mango). Same fragrance compound; lighter lather body in the Vegan version.
How does the Tallow base compare to 1776's Siero?
Man from Mayfair is on our Tallow base — beef tallow plus whole donkey milk, with kokum, shea, and cocoa butter for skin conditioning. 1776 sits on the Siero base, which adds whole water buffalo milk and water buffalo milk whey on top of the donkey milk. Tallow gives a cleaner, more traditional lather feel; Siero gives a denser, more conditioning one. Same level of post-shave skin feel; different lather mechanics.
Can I use Man from Mayfair in cold water?
Yes — Tallow soaps lather well in cold water with a proper brush build. Allow 30 to 45 seconds with a wet brush. Warm water speeds up the build slightly but isn't needed.
Where is Man from Mayfair made?
In our New Jersey workshop. Saponification, scenting, pressing, and packaging all happen in house. The fragrance compound is mixed by an American perfumer.
Is Man from Mayfair a moisturizing shaving soap?
In the way most shavers use the word — yes. People often search for "moisturizing shaving soap" or "moisturizing shave soap" looking for a soap that leaves skin feeling conditioned, hydrated, and protected through the shave and after. The technical term we use is "conditioning" because the soap is rinsed off (it doesn't moisturize the way a leave-on cream does), but the experience matches what people mean when they search for moisturizing soaps. Man from Mayfair sits on our Tallow base — tallow plus whole donkey milk and supporting plant butters — built for exactly that deeply conditioned skin feel. For an actual leave-on moisturizer to layer over the shave, pair with our grass-fed tallow zinc oxide cream.
