What Denarius smells like

Denarius was the standard silver coin of the Roman Empire — the everyday currency of the Mediterranean for centuries. Denarius the soap is the more formal complement to our Roman scent: heavier, more resinous, more "imperial throne room" than "marketplace."

This soap would tend to discolor natural hair shaving brushes after a few uses of the soap. Synthetic fiber brush or a dedicated brush for this soap is recommended. Notes of Leather, Vanilla, Clary Sage, Geranium, Patchouli, Ionone Woods, Anise. This is our interpretation of Mousse de Saxe.

The fragrance is built on Leather, Vanilla, Clary Sage, Geranium, Patchouli, Ionone Woods, Anise. The opening is brightest, the heart settles in around the twenty-minute mark, and the dry-down lasts for hours after the rinse.

Tallow or Vegan — which to pick

Denarius is offered in two builds. They share the same fragrance compound (so the scent journey is identical) but the fat structure underneath is different.

Tallow ($29.99) is the original Siero formulation. The conditioning is denser; the lather has more body. If you’ve shaved with WhollyKaw Siero soaps before, this is the same direction.

Vegan ($21.99) swaps tallow for plant-derived fats (kokum, shea, cocoa, mango). Same fragrance compound, lighter lather body, brighter and cleaner under the razor.

Who Denarius is not for

Cost per shave

A 4 oz / 114 g puck of Denarius lasts most shavers ~5 months with daily shaves:

For comparison, a single-use disposable cartridge plus a foam can typically runs $0.40–$0.60 per shave with worse skin feel.

What customers say

★★★★★

Really enjoy this scent!

this one i was hesitant at first as i wasnt use to the complex sweet aroma of this one. after i began to lather the scent got more life to it and i started to really enjoy the scent much more than my initial experience. its really growing on me and i really appreciate it now. the performance was not an issue as all of the wholly kaw bases are great, but the siero base is truly exceptional, this is a sweet scent perfect for date night! Similar to ysl l'homme l'intense. they pair perfect together!

★★★★★

I have ultra-sensitive skin (my wife calls me the peach), really angular features, and stiff wiry thin-but-tough whiskers, so I'm a real persnickety shaver. I've been DE shaving for only a couple of years. When I started, I bought a bunch of soap brands just to give them a whirl. The brand I always come back to WhollyKaw for just peak performance, Real nice glide and the afterfeel is just glorious--it feels like my face is glowing after a shave with WhollyKaw. But here's the big BONUS...with some of WhollyKaw's scents, some times upon opening the canister up and starting with the first shave I'll say to myself, "Huh...That's weird and strange." But usually a bit after shaving, I'll really dig the scent. WhollyKaw's scents are rich, complex, deep, and unfold beautifully. This Denarius is the latest example of many of the WhollyKaw scents that the more I spend time with the scent, the more it just feels good. On top of all that, every time I've ordered from WhollyKaw, the order arrives promptly with clear communication. I'm in the ecommerce shipping business and this isn't as easy as it looks, so kudos to WhollyKaw. Thank you for your unique creations. I look forward to every new release. Stay well.

★★★☆☆

I bought the vegan base of this soap and was not impressed with the smell. It straight up just smells like baby powder. The lather quality and shave slickness is very good though.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a puck of Denarius last?

Most shavers get 5 to 6 months out of a 4-ounce puck with daily shaving. The Siero base lathers efficiently — you don't need to load heavily — so a puck stretches further than a typical mass-market soap.

What does Denarius smell like?

See the scent walkthrough on the page above for the structured top/heart/base note breakdown. Denarius is an ancient roman composition that develops over a 3-4 hour wear time on skin.

Why is it called Denarius?

Denarius was the standard silver coin of the Roman Empire — the everyday currency of the Mediterranean for centuries. Denarius the soap is the more formal complement to our Roman scent: heavier, more resinous, more "imperial throne room" than "marketplace."

Tallow or Vegan — which build to pick?

Tallow build is the original — beef tallow plus whole donkey milk on the Siero base, denser conditioning lather. Vegan build swaps tallow for plant-derived fats (kokum, shea, cocoa, mango), lighter lather body, same fragrance compound. Pick on dietary preference; both share the scent journey.

Do I need a brush, or can I lather with my hands?

Denarius is a hard puck designed for brush use. A synthetic or boar brush builds the best lather. Hand-lathering works in a pinch but won't get the dense, conditioning lather the soap is designed for.

Is Denarius a moisturizing shaving soap?

In the way most shavers use the word — yes. People search for "moisturizing shaving soap" looking for a soap that leaves skin feeling conditioned, hydrated, and protected. The technical term we use is "conditioning" because the soap is rinsed off, but the experience matches what people mean. Denarius on our Siero base delivers exactly that conditioned skin feel. For an actual leave-on moisturizer, pair with our grass-fed tallow zinc oxide cream.

Can I use Denarius in cold water?

Yes — Siero soaps lather well in cool water with a 30-45 second build. Hot water gives a slightly faster build but isn't necessary.

Where is Denarius made?

In our New Jersey workshop. Saponification, scenting, pressing, and packaging all happen in house. The fragrance compound is mixed by an American perfumer.
